The story behind this
Dave ran a plumbing business in Birmingham. Nineteen years in the trade. Fully Gas Safe. Never short of word-of-mouth work.
In 2022 he paid a local agency £1,800 for a website. It took eleven weeks to go live. Three months after launch — page four of Google. Zero calls from the site.
He rang the agency. They told him he needed to “invest in ongoing SEO” — £350 a month, minimum six-month contract. He paid it. For four months. Then they stopped returning his emails.
Dave is not an edge case.
I saw the same pattern with an electrician in Bristol who self-built on Wix, spent forty hours getting it “right”, and still could not rank locally because the template had no structured data, no local schema, and a 4.2-second load time on mobile.
